Somewhere between Diablo IV’s coliseum polish and Hades’ character-first storytelling sits Hell Clock, a Brazilian ARPG-roguelike from Rogue Snail (published by Mad Mushroom) that critics have quietly been calling one of the year’s best-kept indie secrets. Rock Paper Shotgun described it as “very much a home-cooked meal to Blizzard’s uncannily shapely cheeseburger”, which is roughly the most accurate one-line summary I’ve read all year. You play Pajeú, a warrior of the historical siege of Canudos in 1896 Brazil, descending into an ever-warping Hell to rescue the soul of his mentor The Counselor from the demons of colonial oppression, a setting the ARPG shelf frankly needed to hear from. The loop combines the deep-loot dopamine of Diablo, the run-based tempo of a roguelike, and a build-crafting system built around Relics you can Imbue with Tools or straight-up Corrupt for high-risk rerolls, spread across a full three-act campaign, a Cursed War DLC, and a meaty Ascension endgame layered with Hell Mode difficulty tiers, Penance modifiers, Promises, and Constellation powers. Very Positive at 84 percent across 1,653 reviews, priced at twenty bucks, and a natural shelf-mate to Grim Dawn and Soulstone Survivors it currently ships in a bundle with. For anyone still riding the Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred high, this is the indie that deserves your very next weekend.
