Once in a great while an indie darling finally comes out of years of quiet development and does exactly what everyone hoped it would, and Sam Eng’s Skate Story, out via Devolver Digital in December 2025, has proceeded to earn Overwhelmingly Positive with 97% of 1,740 English reviews, 10/10 from Shacknews, 5/5 and Game of the Year from Eurogamer, and 87/100 from PC Gamer. The pitch alone is one of the greatest in modern indie history: you play a demon in the Underworld, made of glass and pain, handed a skateboard by the Devil with instructions to skate all the way to the Moon and swallow it in exchange for your freedom. What unfolds is a stylish, achingly beautiful skate-adventure RPG across nine layers of Hell, with 70-plus real tricks to master, waxed ledges and unholy gaps to grind, and a soul-purchase economy for fresh decks, wheels, and trucks. The visual language sits somewhere between PS1 low-poly, surrealist art film, and a Devolver Digital fever dream, and Blood Cultures’ hypnotic soundtrack (with additional tracks from John Fio) is already one of the best of the decade. Ships in a knowing bundle with Bomb Rush Cyberfunk and another with Session: Skate Sim for anyone building a Real Skater shelf. This is a genuine 2025 landmark, a game that turns a broken skate demon’s grief into one of the finest indie narratives of the year, and one of the most confident pieces of solo-dev artistry you will ever push a controller through.
