There isn’t a game with a longer, stranger, more legendary genesis story on the 2026 calendar than 1666: Amsterdam. First announced by Assassin’s Creed co-creator Patrice Désilets in 2011, tangled in a THQ bankruptcy, a Ubisoft trademark dispute, and years of quiet reworking at his studio Panache Digital Games (of Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey), it has finally emerged, fifteen years later, as a free 30-minute prologue on Steam, with the full game due in Early Access later this year. The prologue introduces Noa, the newly-anointed Collector of the Zaindaris, drawn into a supernatural conspiracy woven across three timelines: 1666, 1999, and the present day. Early gameplay hints at investigation, occult tracking, and confrontations with entities called the Originals during pagan gatherings known as Esbats, all in a beautifully realised Dutch Golden Age Amsterdam that only Désilets’ team could stage. It looks, unmistakably, like the game a former Assassin’s Creed II director always wanted to make: historical, atmospheric, dense with unseen influence, and unafraid of its own weirdness. For anyone who has been quietly wondering what happened to Désilets since he lost the AC franchise, this is the answer, and Steam wallets should probably brace.
