There’s a small but growing pocket of Greek indie horror that has been quietly punching above its weight lately, and Konstantinos Klimantakis’s Mechanis Obscura, published by NoBudgetStudios and awarded both HEGA Grand Prix Best Game and Audience Choice at the 2025 Hellenic Game Awards, is one of the more compelling recent examples. Pitched as a first-person psychological escape-room thriller, it fuses FMV cutscenes filmed in the actual streets of Thessaloniki, intricate mechanical puzzles, and the specific unsettling texture of early-2000s underground horror cinema into something that feels equal parts Saw, Cube, and Sam Barlow’s Immortality. The plot begins in August 2025 with the wrong click on a forgotten forum, and ends however far you can get through a mechanical labyrinth beneath the city where every door is locked, every gear is ticking, and a secret organisation has apparently chosen you for reasons obscured by design. There are no choices, no branching endings, just relentless escape or vanish, with ARG elements bleeding out into the real world for players brave enough to follow the breadcrumbs offline. A free demo is up, AI use is disclosed clearly for concept and promotional material only, and this is the kind of small-team Greek indie that deserves the wider audience its award haul is starting to earn it.
